Spotlight Wednesday - SORTA LIKE A ROCK STAR by Matthew Quick

Today I'm shining the spotlight on one of my favorite reads of 2010. SORTA LIKE A ROCK STAR has everything I love in a contemporary novel.

Characters who are unique and wonderful and true. Characters I want to be around, who would be my friends if they were real. Characters who make me laugh and make me cry. It's a book that after the last page was turned, I looked up to the heavens and said, "More books like this, please!"

School Library Journal gave it a starred review, saying "Amber Appleton's unending optimism in the face of difficult circumstances is well depicted with snappy dialogue and inner musings. When real tragedy hits and Amber is unable to cope, the stark difference between the Amber of the past and the present is delivered in extensive white space and short paragraphs. Amber feels blank. Her reemergence is abrupt, but like a musical, it provides the feel-good ending that rolls on until every every bow is tied, every bad guy is given a dose of the Amber spirit, and all of the people in her life are brought together. Hugely enjoyable."

I love the trailer too. Check it out. And then pick up this book. You'll be glad you did!

Have you read SORTA LIKE A ROCK STAR? What'd you think?

I'm sitting here, fingers on keypad, trying to come up with words to describe how much I loved SORTA LIKE A ROCK STAR. Phenomenal is true but sounds over the top. Heartwrenching, also true, is only part of the story. Glorious, well, that just makes me sound old. Here's the deal. Amber - the MC - is a unique combination of streetwise, quirky and faithful. Yeah, faithful despite a crappy life. The secondary characters, just as quirky, are some of the most well-developed I've seen in YA fiction. You'll need kleenex but you'll be grinning ear to ear by the end. Oh, and did I mention there are Buffy references? What more is there to love? Go get it, you'll be a rock star if you do.

I loved this book and I loved Amber Appleton, self-appointed ambassador of hope. With her quirky good nature, uncommon strength and optimistic spirit, Amber had me rooting for her from the very beginning. Like you said, "Sorta Like a Rock Star" definitely leaves you wishing more books were like this one.

I have been shouting the praises of this book from the roof tops!! An excellent read (if you don't mind some tears). Read this book then pick up his first book, The Silver Linings Playbook!
Matthew Quick is a hell of a strong writer!

Being a huge fan of Quick was waiting impatiently for his next novel. Was not expecting YA but this adult could not have loved this book more. Amber Appleton is who all mom's want their daughters to be. She is amazing in a very real way...a great example for teens...and all adults too. Buy this book for your teen...but make sure you read it first.
