So today we're going to talk about rivalry in high school. Because tomorrow, we're so excited that Sara Bennett Wealer's debut YA novel, RIVAL, is released!! I've heard wonderful things about her book and can't wait to read it.
On her personal blog, Sara has been highlighting famous rivalries. I've enjoyed reading about them, because I find it so fascinating. Here is one where she talked about Nancy Kerrigan and Tonya Harding. That was big news where I lived because Tonya lived in Oregon at the time. She still might live here, but I haven't really kept track. If you know the story, you can understand why.
I wasn't a very competitive person in high school. It's not really my nature. Like, I don't know what it feels like to want to get a part in a play so badly or to earn the pitcher's spot on the softball team that you hate the person competing against you for that part or the spot.
However, there was this sophomore guy I liked my freshman year and a certain beautiful girl that made my claws come out. Is that rivalry?
I mean, the girl was SO beautiful. And she was new to our school. So every single guy seemed to have his eyes on her. And this guy I liked, who I'd gotten to know as a friend during football season, as we travelled as a group around to away football games during the playoffs, was really interested in her. And it started to feel like a competition. Can I get him to talk to me today more than he talks to her? If I ask him to the Winter Formal before she gets a chance, would he go with me? Well, I did, and he said yes. But only because his crush had asked someone else. Yes, he told me he'd wanted to go with her, but she'd asked someone else. That should have clued me in to the type of guy he was.

I was a bit of a late starter to the whole boy lusting thing, but I did compete against friends for grades. I wanted to be the smartest kid in English. Unfortunately I was fighting a losing battle!
I always used to say that I wasn't competitive until my younger sister pointed out that wasn't exactly true. I was competitive, I just chose not to compete. Safer that way, I guess. Which means I'm left now wondering what kinds of victories I missed out on because I never stepped up to the starting line.
Believe it or not, I am actually only really competitive with myself. For better or for worse. Never had a rival in high school, but was probably harder on myself than any competitor could have been.
I've never been the competitive type. Life isn't a race. "The faster and harder you push yourself to the end, the faster you'll get the prize!!!" Too bad the prize at the end of life is death. o.o
So yeah, no decent rivalry stories. But I'm still excited about RIVAL. :D
Banned complain !! Complaining only causes life and mind become more severe. Enjoy the rhythm of the problems faced. No matter ga life, not a problem not learn, so enjoy it :)
