Contemps in the news!

Is YA contemporary fiction having a moment? Well, we think so, obviously! But lately, it seems like there are lots of folks out there who agree. Recent and up-and-coming Contemp releases have had some great shout-outs in the press. Did you catch Melissa Walker's SMALL TOWN SINNERS on Cosmogirl.com,  Vogue.com, in USA Today, and the amazing review in the New York Times? Here's a snippet:

"Walker has written a credible and tender evocation of the moment when a young person’s beliefs begin to emerge and potentially diverge from the teachings of a family’s religion."

Also in the news and topical as ever is Sarah Darer Littman's WANT TO GO PRIVATE? The LA Times called the book "a bold investigation of a potentially lethal issue."

Look, we contemp writers like a nice vampire yarn every now and then as much as the next reader. But what all of these write-ups are hitting on is exactly what we've been saying all along: contemporary fiction is all about keeping it real. We're tackling issues that teens face every day -- and hopefully, we're offering a small slice of accessibility (while steering clear of icky moralizing).

And we couldn't do it without readers like you. Thanks SO MUCH to everyone who participated in the Contemps Challenge (and ps: it's not too late to post a review of ANY of releases to be entered to win swag!) -- and who keeps contemp fiction alive and kicking!
