BURNOUT by Adrienne Vrettos

Kirkus is not known for giving gushing reviews. In fact, Kirkus reviewers can sometimes be a tad mean.
But that’s not how Kirkus felt about Burnout, by Adrienne Maria Vrettos. They liked it so much, they gave it a star. And once you read it, you'll see why
Burnout is set in New York City, the New York City that only someone who actually lives there can write with authority.
Nan thinks she might be a ghost after she wakes up in a subway train with no memory of how she got there. It's the day after Halloween, and she's wearing a too-small pink plastic dress, no shoes, and skeleton makeup that won’t come off even when she tries to wash her face.
Burnout cuts back and forth from what Nan does after that to the events that brought her to that point.
Nan once had a best friend nicknamed “Seemy,” and they spent a lot of time drinking and wandering the city at night, having lied to their parents about spending the night at each other’s places.
What happened to drive them apart? And why does Nan have the dark feeling that something terrible might have brought them together again?  She searches the city for clues, and each one she finds is scarier than the last.  Why doesn’t she remember what happened on Halloween? Why has someone written “Help me”? on her chest? Where is Seemy?
And when Nan’s memory finally returns, will it be in time for her to stop something even worse from happening?
As Kirkus says, “Stark, compelling, perceptive: a winner.”

I have a book coming out next year about a girl who wakes up and doesn't remember, so I was really drawn to this one. My teenager stole it from me as soon as I was done.
